(This post is Day 16 in my series, 31 Days in the Life of a Christian Writer, and today’s prompt is: READ.)
To start us off, I saw this picture and thought of all of you:
The above quote is so true, isn’t it?
I cannot overemphasize the importance of reading good, quality books as a means of improving and cultivating a strong writing life. I encourage you to read books from a variety of voices and genres — not just the same three or four authors you’ve been reading your whole life.
Read fiction, nonfiction, poetry, memoir, biography. Read books my Christian authors and non-Christian authors. Read YA books and children’s picture books. Read books about writing.
Speaking of reading, do you have the free Kindle Reading App? Even if you don’t have a Kindle, you can use this free Kindle Reading App on any device to read your ebooks wherever you go!

Thanks for these recommendations, Brian!
Also, “Writing Fiction” by Janet Burroway
What a great list; thanks for the great ideas!
Two of my favourite writing books are about poetry-writing: The Poetry Home Repair Manual by Ted Kooser, and How to Write a Poem by Tania Runyan. I write quite a bit of poetry and have learned TONS from both books.
Thanks so much for sharing, Jeannie!
Oh, I’ve been meaning to read Tania Runyan’s book for a while. Thanks for the reminder!
Thanks so much for this great list, Kate.
These are my go to books about writing craft: The Writer’s Portable Mentor by Priscilla Long, The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Nonfiction edited by Dinty W. Moore, and Writing Creative Nonfiction edited by Carolyn Forché and Philip Gerard
Also, Letters and Life: On Being a Writer, On Being a Christian by Bret Lott is filled with such beautiful reflections, meditations, and encouragement
I have heard great things about Stephen King’s book On Writing. I should add it to the writing list.
I have benefited from these books: Still Writing by Dani Shapiro and The Art of Memoir by Mary Karr
Thank you Kate! Such an important list for me to save. I have only read one on your wish list. I have been hunting down other recommendations, and here is a comprehensive list!
I love Ann Lamott! And I love Sound and Sense by Laurence Perrine and Thomas R. Arp. The book is an introduction to poetry, so it helps newbies read and write it!
Stephen King’s book on writing is SO good. I’ve never read any of his novels and probably never will but his book about writing was gold.
I’m the same way! I don’t like Stephen King’s books, but his memoir was fascinating!
I’ve read Zinsser’s book, On Writing Well, and found it helpful. I have your book, and also want to read Ann Lamont’s and Steven King’s books. Thanks for the encouragement to keep learning.
Thank you for sharing this list. I would like to read a good book about writing memoirs
Has everyone already read Writer to Writer by Cecil Murphey? I saw he was on Compel before I joined and I love his style. Just got his book.
Great list, my favourite writing book of all time is “the sound of paper” by Julia Cameron, such a gently wise book. I also read “On being a writer” on your recommendation Kate and really enjoyed it. i want to go back and work through it properly now
I own On Writing and Bird By Bird. Now I just need to read them and use the information. sigh…
I’ve heard so many good things about “On Writing Well.” I’m going to have to check it out.
I’ve enjoyed 52 pep talks for writers.
