This week’s Five Minute Friday writing prompt is: BACK
Ready? GO.
After a glorious three months of summer vacation, it’s time to go back to school.
Many schools in our area have already started, but our kids only begin the day after Labor Day.
This past week we went to Back to School Night, an evening of mass chaos in which every student at the school and at least one accompanying adult haul all of the school supplies for every class into the building at the same time and attempt to find and fill loud-clanging lockers.
As you can imagine, it was quite a spectacle.
Now we have a couple more days of loose schedules and kids home during the day, and then they leave.
In some ways, I’m ready for a more regular routine, for rhythms and hopefully more productivity.
But I’ll miss them, too.
I teased them a few times during the summer when they were getting on my nerves: “Isn’t it time for you to go back to school?”
But deep down I like it when they’re around.
It will be all too soon before they fly the nest, and I’ll be looking back and longing for days with kids bickering about small things and cracking jokes and asking for more food.
I will savor these moments, even as they go back to school, and remember the gift that they are.
The gift of one more day, and one more, and maybe one more after that.
STOP.

I thought of going back to school
to learn a different trade,
thinking that it might be cool
to undo mistakes I’d made.
Perhaps I might have studied law,
but I’d put an ‘out’ before it,
and thus expose my fatal flaw;
propriety’s what I don’t befit.
Maybe a bouncer at a biker bar?
That might work a treat!
Or drive a demolition-derby car,
crack skulls with the elite!
So many ways to wind up dead!
God looks at me, and shakes His head.
Andrew, this is priceless! Your wit brought a smile (and my own head shaking) this morning. I hope today holds blessings immeasurable for you, my brother.
Kate, when I had three kids at home I loved “back to school.” Life felt normal and reg’ler then!!! Alas, mine are flown from the nest and now one of our grands has flown as well! But I do still have one grandboy that comes here every morning after automech class at the tech school. He does his homework here – he is homeschooled. One day he’ll fly too – the seasons of life! It is good to look back though and realize how blessed we are! Love you Kate!
Glad you enjoyed the Thursday night respite. Cherish each day!
Back :Looking back at living in a small rural town of Nineveh, Indiana as I was growing up in my grandparent house my grandparent live up stairs and dad, mom,My sister, brother and me live down stairs in a big white house up on top of a hill.Ling in a small country town while I was growing up with one small grocery store,Post Office, one bank and one gas station. The small grocery store didn’t always have what we wanted so we have to drive to a different town.Looking back I can remember being in and out of the hospital alot with a bleeding unclean. I remember watching my mother and listen to my mom talking to me alot will she was canning vegetables for the winter so we would have something to eat if we got snow ingot aloof snow and couldn’t get out. As I was going up I had alot of Barbie dolls to play with. I walk down long gravel drive way every morning to catch the School bus. I remember as I was growing up and spend time with my great-great grandmother when I could in her birthday. As and my birthday was on the same day . I remember my dad and mom had to buy us a few things to play with to play outside with since there wasn’t much for us to do.My dad and mom always find us something to do.Ftom play out side to watch T.V.and do some crafts. There is more I could tell but I think I will stop there on this one.
So glad you’ve had a wonderful summer! Time flies by so quickly! I still can’t believe my “kids” are adults! Cherish every minute! I must admit that I have missed you and will be happy to have you back at #fmfparty on Thursday! See you then!
