This week’s writing prompt is: SACRIFICE

sacrifice

Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.

This past week, my sister donated 60% of her liver to a family friend in need of a transplant.

(What?! Who does that?!)

I first heard about her plan back in November, when she called to tell me she was a match and asked me what I thought about the possibility of such a procedure.

My first thought was, “I had two C-sections. I’m definitely too selfish to willingly get cut open again.”

But she did it.

She gave part of her body so someone else could have life.

It’s such a living picture of the gospel — how Jesus Christ give all of His body so His people could have life . . . and not just a few more years or decades of life on this earth, but life eternal.

His was the ultimate sacrifice.

The ultimate example of suffering and giving Himself with no benefit in return.

Yesterday I went to visit my sister in the hospital, and she was in a lot of pain. It was hard to watch her suffer and not be able to do anything to help or relieve her discomfort.

I watched as she clenched her jaw and focused on one breath at a time, and I was filled with admiration at her willingness to give such a sacrificial, generous gift at such a great cost to herself with no expectation of anything in return.

A truly selfless act.

An act of love.

STOP.
