This week’s FMF writing prompt is: RELIEF
Ready? GO.Â
Last week Monday night, I probably woke up 12 times between 10pm and 5:30am to look at the clock.
My sister was supposed to show up at a hospital two and a half hours from our hometown at 5:30 on Tuesday morning for pre-op preparation.
I was jittery for her.
As I mentioned in my post last week on the prompt, SACRIFICE, my sister donated 60% of her liver in a transplant procedure. The operation was scheduled to begin around 7:30am and last about 5 hours. My brother-in-law was the only one at the hospital with her that day.
I made sure my phone was not on silent, and I kept it with me everywhere I went that day, waiting for updates.
Around noon, a text message came through as I was driving. I impatiently waited for a red light before glancing down at my phone. Surgery got started about an hour late, so probably an hour and a half to go.Â
I exhaled and kept driving, looking at the clock at least once every minute.
Finally, it came:
Surgery is complete! Everything went great!
And then, relief.
STOP.Â

I’m so glad all went well, Kate!
I see them now beyond the wall,
blades are dull in the grey dawn.
We know we cannot kill them all,
and all our hope is gone.
Perhaps this was not quite the place
to draw the red line in the sand,
but there is in stubbornness a grace
and this is where we take a stand.
Relief was promised, but it failed
and now we are bereft;
but know that hearts here have not quailed
in the little time that we have left.
Perhaps we’ll make the future know
the name, the place, the Alamo.
Andrew, I recently heard Knoxville, TN radio host, Hallerin Hilton Hill, say, “Gratitude is a survival skill.” Those words jumped out of the car radio and straight to my heart. I knew they were true. Your words here confirm it. Blessings, brother. I am grateful for you and the ministry of honesty, encouragement, and hope you bring to our world.
Susan, wow…I am so honoured. You just made my day!
I’m so glad it went well! I’ve been praying for her :). May God continue to heal everyone involved.
I am happy to hear that the surgery went well. I know well the constant looking at the phone and waiting for new. Glad there was relief.
I can so relate to all you were and are feeling! Hope recovery is smooth and quick!
I’m glad it went well – she is so brave to do that! Praying that her recovery goes well.
So happy to hear that it went well. Praying for a swift recovery!
