forward

Earlier this week, author Holley Gerth shared these words on Twitter:

Growth actually looks like a series of peaks and valleys. When we mess up, yes, we experience a valley. But we need to remember that valley doesn’t mean we’re back at the beginning. We’re so much higher up than when we began.

Progress has been made. Millimeter by millimeter, growth has happened. We have moved forward with God’s help.

We’ve been reading through the book of Philippians in our family devotions, and recently read these words from the Apostle Paul:

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12-14).

“Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.”

How quickly I get caught up in the things of this world and forget to look “forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God” (Hebrews 11:10).

In 2 Peter 3, Peter uses the phrase “looking forward” three times in just three verses:

“Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him” (2 Peter 3:11-14).

What are you looking forward to?
