This week’s FMF writing prompt is: LOUD
About six months ago, our family was going through a difficult season and I was struggling to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. I found myself often overwhelmed by fears, doubts, and “what ifs.” These fears consumed my mind, like bees buzzing in and around their hive.
We shared some of our challenges with our small group at church when the group opened up for prayer requests. Then one of the group members offered to pray. I don’t remember everything he said, but one line in particular struck me deeply. He said:
“Lord, make your promises louder.”
I thought, yes. This is what I need. Lord, make your promises louder.
It reminded me of the Sirens of Greek mythology, “dangerous creatures who lured sailors to destruction with their sweet songs” (Wikipedia). I once read somewhere that the only way to keep the sailors from jumping into the water in pursuit of the temptress (and ultimately drown in the process) was to play a more pleasing sound that drew them to stay in the boat.
In a world where there is so much noise all around us and so many platforms and channels and demands vying for our attention and brain space, may the Lord ever make His promises loudest and most prominent of all.
“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” ~ Philippians 4:8
His promises are the most pleasing song of all.

I love the prayer that your friend offered, but I can’t help but wonder if God is asking us to turn down the other noise in our life instead?

Oh, Kate. How many times I’ve wanted the Lord to make the path obvious, to make His promises unmissable. But sometimes, I think He wants us to seek His face, to know Him more so we hear His words to us more clearly.
And Philippians 4:8 is one of my life verses. 🙂
