This week’s Five Minute Friday writing prompt is: DISAPPOINT
Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.Â
We had plans today. Plans tomorrow. Plans for Saturday. Plans we were looking forward to. But late this morning, my daughter came to me with the digital thermometer in hand and asked, “Is this a fever?”
And just like that, our plans changed. Like the majority of 2020, what we thought was going to happen did not happen.
I’ve discovered something about myself this year in a way I hadn’t entirely been able to articulate before: I really hate disappointing people. Like, really. I’m sure it has something to do with my Enneagram number, whatever that is . . . but whatever the case, I just really don’t like to disappoint anyone. And today, my kids were disappointed because of the changed plans.
I told my husband, “They were so looking forward to this day, and now it’s not going to happen the way we thought.” He replied, “It’s okay. It’s good for them to learn once in a while that the world doesn’t always give us everything we want.”
It’s true. The world will break its promises, but the Lord will always be faithful and give us what He deems best for our growth and dependence on Him.

The best-laid plans of mice and men
do gang aft a-gley,
and that, my friend, is truly when
you have to earn your pay
and heal the disappointed hearts,
not tending to your own,
and mend all of the shattered parts
so hope again is sown
in the souls that look to you
with wide and anxious eyes;
stand firm, old son, and walk them through
what has been fell surprise
to the place where soon is born
a brighter day in shining morn.
Kate, there truly is so much disappointment experienced these last several months. May God be with your children (and you) to bring you all the assurance that He sees, He cares, and is with you in each disappointment. He will never disappoint.
Thank you, dear Joanne!
Disappointment is one big tangled web. The older I get, the less I am disappointed. Not Scrooge-like but realistic, I suppose.
Makes sense, Susan! 🙂
Aww, I’m so sorry! I hope her fever isn’t the bad thing. And I agree with your husband–disappointments help us grow, even if we don’t enjoy them.
Thank you, Anita!
Ya got that right, Sister! The world continues to disappoint but we have a Father that never does. This year has taught me not to get upset about the little things and to hold my plans loosely. I’m learning to accept changed plans as a way of life. Hope your daughter is feeling better.
Amen!
Hope your daughter is feeling better.
