I chose this week’s writing prompt to coincide with the Hope*Writers 7-Day Instagram Writing Challenge happening this week. I’ll admit, it took me a while to come up with something to write, but here we go! 😉
This week’s FMF writing prompt is: FRESH
It has happened to my twice now. I’ve had a headache for most of the day while working from home, then stepped outside into the brisk winter afternoon air to get the mail, take a deep breath, and my headache subsided.
I can’t explain it and still don’t know why or how it happened, but the fresh air just cleared it right up.
The other night I took my kids to an event where we would have to be indoors with masks for two hours and just before stepping into the building I lowered my mask and drew in a deep breath through my nostrils. I knew it would be a while before I could get another good, clean breath, and wanted to make the most of the fresh air while I still had access to it.
Some days can feel as if life itself has become a bit stale and stifling, like a drawn-out headache shrouded in a layer of fog. As if the air is covered in dark fabric and the light cannot penetrate. And yet, the Lord’s mercies are new every morning. “He himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else” (Acts 17:25). All we have to do is breathe in His grace and goodness, the fresh mercies of His kindness to us each day.

Our nation has been on a binge,
but it’s not beyond repair
if we sweep away the nutcase fringe
and breathe some fresh clean air
unpolluted by the left,
untainted by the right,
uncorrupted by the heft
of “Only I am right!”
Perhaps if we, goodhearted all,
will somehow band together,
this precious land, it will not fall
and we can sooner weather
this shouting rancid hate-abyss,
our very own self-made Charybdis.
Well said, Andrew. You are such a gifted poet. My heart weeps for our divided nation and prays for unity for our precious land and its people, that “we, goodhearted all, will somehow band together.” By God’s grace and for His glory, may it be so.

Kate – this was like a breath of fresh air>>>> “All we have to do is breathe in His grace and goodness, the fresh mercies of His kindness to us each day.” Amen. Fresh mercies every day!
Thank You Lord for those fresh, new mercies! And, clean air!
Fresh
Fresh flowers,
Fresh fruit,
Fresh fish;
Fresh air,
Fresh grass,
Fresh wish;
Fresh sheets,
Fresh water,
Fresh heart;
Fresh breeze,
Fresh thoughts,
Fresh start.
Amen Kate, I suffer with migraines daily, and I always tell people my head loves the cold, for some reason cold will decrease the intensity. “Some days can feel as if life itself has become a bit stale and stifling.” So very true. Than you for your insights and encouraging words. Blessings

Yes! God’s mercies are fresh every morning. I can relate to the need for fresh air. I sleep with my window open as often as possible. The hot summer months are the most difficult because having the window open and the AC on just doesn’t make sense!
My dogs are always sniffing the air, as dogs do. Whether they’re looking for a bite in the kitchen, or chasing down a squirrel, they’re always on the alert (or at the very least ready to snap to alert). Your words here made me think of them, and make me think that, maybe, part of walking with the Lord is allowing the Lord to shape that kind of alertness in me – always sniffing for the good and the grace, even in the middle of difficult days.
We too make sure to get fresh air outside each day. Walking the dogs helps. I can’t imagine being in a workplace all day with a mask! Thank God, I don’t have to find out how that feels.
That’s a great idea to take a deep breathe before going inside. Also another of God’s mercies. Thanks, Kate.
