This week’s FMF writing prompt is: DESIGN
Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.
My 13-year-old has taken an interest in drawing, and he’s actually quite good. I’m continually amazed by the work he produces, and that without taking any formal art classes apart from the few he had in elementary school. He watches YouTube videos and tutorials and reads books from the library to learn new techniques and mediums, alternating between pencil, colored pencil, and charcoal.
He has even ventured to tackle the human portrait — a subject I veered far away from during my own high school and college art classes. There was too much margin for error, too much detail and far too many intricacies for me to attempt such a feat.
Yet my son is determined to get it right. He practices and practices, seeking advice from mentors and friends, erasing, correcting, throwing away, starting over.
He finds joy in the act of creating, and I find joy watching him create.
I watch from the kitchen as he studies his latest draft, unaware that he is reflecting the image of his Creator.
STOP.

Not a sonnet, and it’s past Christmas, but what the hey…a song rewritten from the structural esigner’s standpoint.
Up on the housetop reindeer pause;
oh, dear God, it’s Santa Claus!
In an overloaded sleigh with its runners bowed,
he’s exceeded our roof’s structural load.
Ho, ho ho, there the rafters go!
Ho, ho, ho, look out below!
Down through the housetop, quick, quick, quick,
and into the cellar falls Good St. Nick!
Andrew I love your song rewritten from the designers standpoint!
What a blessing it is to see our children using the gifts that God gave them.
I have an extremely artistic daughter, and watching her always amazes me!
My granddaughter is turning to art at 7-years old. She is very creative and I am excited to see where this leads for her. I love that you pointed out how your son is reflecting the Creator. With every masterpiece Addi hands me, I see the same in her.
More power to your son and his art. I’m guessing he gets his discipline and passion to follow his heart from you.
