This week’s FMF writing prompt is: ACCOUNTABILITY

accountability

When I look back on the writing projects that I’ve actually completed, they all have one thing in common: someone was expecting me to complete it by a particular deadline. I had accountability. I wasn’t just floating out there on my own, succumbing to my own whims and emotions about whether or not to write. I had expectations to meet, and I’m not one to let others down easily.

Even when it was a self-published project with self-inflicted deadline, I was working with someone who expected me to complete it by a certain time so they could take over with their role in the project.

Accountability works. That’s one reason I’m really looking forward to this brand new writing accountability group I’m offering in September. I’ve never done anything like this before, but I have high hopes that it will help a lot of writers (myself included) make progress in their writing lives.

I know myself. I have lots of ideas, but life happens and I so often push those ideas aside in favor of seemingly more pressing, more important tasks. But if I share my goal with someone else and ask them to hold me to it, I’m much more likely to follow through and get it done.

This is partially about productivity, but it is far more about faithfulness. It’s about being faithful to the work God has called us to and using the gifts He has given rather than burying our talents in the ground.

When the Lord asks you, “What did you do with the talents I gave you?” what will you say?
