Welcome to this week’s edition of the Five Minute Friday link-up!
I know I say this every week, but you really want to make sure you’re on the FMF email list, because there are a LOT of opportunities for writers coming up in September and October, and well, I just can’t rely on social media to make sure you get the news!
This week’s FMF writing prompt is: DESPERATE
Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.Â
The news that’s coming out of Afghanistan makes my stomach ache. Even before the horrific bombings that happened this week and claimed over 72 lives, my heart has been so burdened for everyone there who is desperate to get out. I can’t even imagine. I gasp every time I see a photo of a child being handed over a fence or a wall, parents willingly giving them over in hopes that they will have a better life, but not knowing if they will ever see them again. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.
I feel both helpless and indulgent to be sitting in my air-conditioned house without fear of harm or attack, to be able to get into my car and go wherever I want to go. It feels unfair.
The images I’ve seen online of the desperate attempts to escape, to flee from evil, have made me think about how spiritually speaking, we are all in desperate need of rescue. Judgement is coming for all of us, and we have no idea when. And while some are in grave physical danger in this life, we are all in grave spiritual danger if we don’t fling ourselves onto the only One who can save us in this life and the next.
May God have mercy on those precious souls in Afghanistan still trying to escape, and may they ultimately find the only true and living source of eternal hope and rescue.
STOP.Â

I saw the awful bloody things
displayed on my TV,
and once again, the thought it brings:
“Better them than me.”
Makes me feel a churl, that does,
that it’s what I think or say.
What happened to the man I was;
why did he go away?
And I find within a deep despair
that loss of that humanity
will mean that God (it’s only fair)
will turn His face from me,
and I will find my recompense,
the wages of indifference.
This is such a heartbreaking time and such a true parallel with our spiritual state. May God have mercy on us all.
Our world is spiraling out of control. So heartbreaking 💔
