This week’s FMF writing prompt is: CITY
As her gift to me for my 40th birthday earlier this month, my sister surprised me with a weekend in Chicago. We got to go this past weekend, and even though we live less than three hours away and it’s one of my favorite cities, I hadn’t been to Chicago for almost three years. It felt SO good to visit again! After enduring this much of the pandemic with very few outings, I couldn’t get over how tall the buildings looked compared to our suburban hometown. I also realized I hadn’t been in an elevator for a very long time!
Besides the intricate architecture and stunning lakefront cityscape, I love seeing all the different types of people. All shapes, sizes, hairstyles, and fashion choices. Several made us smile, including the teenager dancing to the Macarena playing from a nearby speaker while holding on his friend driving an electric Razor scooter, and the Indian wedding with the DJ on the back of the pick-up truck, a police escort blocking streets for the bridal parade, complete with colored smoke machines, and cut-out posters with life-sized pictures of the bride and groom.
All types, like the City that is to come.

I hear God plans a city
for folks in Heaven to enjoy,
and that is a pity
for this redneck country boy.
I thought that maybe I was saved
and that me and God were cool,
but I think roads should not be paved,
and kids should ride a horse to school
that all place within one room
(hey Bubba, are you with me yet?)
where there is no need for Zoom,
and not even Internet,
so I guess if I get Heaven-sent
it’ll be that part with trailer rent.
I feel like I know many people who have this same perspective, Andrew. (I’m in rural-ish Georgia.) Guess you’ll be in good company 😉
I agree
I had no idea that you lived so close to me. Recently I have been going into the city (Chicago) at least once a month. We drive or take the train depending on what we have planned! Maybe the next time you’re here we could meet for coffee.
I love to people-watch and the city is a perfect place!
The descriptions of the sights you saw made me smile as well.
Thanks for sharing.
