This week’s FMF writing prompt is: PURPOSE

purpose

Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.

A few weeks ago, there was an estate sale in my neighborhood. I was shocked by how many cars lined the streets as early as an hour before the sale was scheduled to start. I decided to meander over there at the start time, more out of curiosity than anything else. Little did I know I would have to take a number and would stand in the driveway for 48 minutes before I could enter the house.

When it was finally my turn to walk inside, I could not believe how much stuff was crammed into one house. It was all sorted and displayed neatly for the sale, but there were countless tables, shelves, cupboards, and countertops filled from top to bottom with items for sale. And that was just on the main floor. I descended the stairs to the basement and found full-on collections of items in every room. It looked like an overstocked store.

I walked from room to room and thought about the homeowners who had just moved out of their home.

What’s the point? I wondered several times. What is the purpose of this life? We just work and make money and accumulate stuff, and then what? We get rid of it all and we die. The end.

It all seemed so meaningless.

My husband walked through the home a few hours after me. He came home and said, “You know, it’s so good to go to things like that because it really puts things into perspective.”

He had similar thoughts to mine.

What are we really living for?

STOP.
