This week’s FMF writing prompt is: COFFEE
Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.
Before I get too carried away with my post this week, I should make a confession:
I don’t actually drink coffee. (Insert gasp here.)
I’m a tea person. Some might say tea snob.
Okay, I did drink coffee in college but that was mostly to fit in with everyone else when we went to Steak n’ Shake to “study” until 2 o’clock in the morning and could get free refills.
Let’s just say I don’t mind coffee, but coffee doesn’t like me. I’ll leave it at that. I do sneak an occasional iced mocha in the summers, but I usually pay for it afterwards.
Anyway . . . not the point of this post. The point is, I do love to meet friends “for coffee,” even though I always order tea. Preferably a chai latte if it’s on the menu.
I love that in this culture (and many others), coffee is the great unifier. It brings people together. It gives us an excuse to pause from our busy schedules, sit down and have face-to-face conversations in real time.
If you haven’t scheduled a coffee date lately, I encourage you to contact a friend to set up a time to meet . . . even if it’s at your house rather than a coffee shop. Rich conversations can happen over hot mugs (or iced glasses) that often don’t happen otherwise.
Let’s carve out the time to invest in each other, shall we?
STOP.

You must try it, treat your taste
to a drink from Heaven’s fountain.
Go along, now, and make haste
to Jamaican’s best, Blue Mountain.
It’s a coffee fit for kings,
it’s so smooth, and gentle, too,
setting for the heart bright wings
and no aftertaste to rue.
Yes, it’s costly, I won’t lie,
and it’s sometimes hard to get,
but, my friend, I won’t deny
that I’m not disappointed yet
with this magic island brew
that, today, I’ll share with you.
Guys, really, truly… treat yourself to some Jamaican Blue Mountain. Not a blend!
It’s wildly expensive, hard to get, but it’s a delightfully smooth coffee without an aftertaste.
You won’t regret it, and if you do, I’ll refund your misery (bonus points to anyone who can identify the origin of that line).
My mouth is watering already, thanks again for another creative response to this week’s writing prompt 👏
My husband loves Jamaican Blue Mountain
I have a tradition of ‘coffee Fridays’ with both of our daughters…now they live so far away, and we have to stuff dozens of coffee Fridays into our short visits. I DO need to reach out and ‘do coffee’ with people I know but don’t know well. Thank you for the reminder!
Why not meet your girls for coffee over zoom?
I appreciate your honesty! 😊
I do enjoy hot or iced tea too!
This was a fun prompt!
Kate, thanks for the reminder to stop and invest in each other. I can’t do coffee either, but I love a chai latter, especially with friends, or with the Lord, by the river.
Great prompt this week! The only trouble was that I had too much to say and not enough time!!! 🙂
I love how you connect coffee (or tea) with social times. My coffee is usually just the quiet time alone with the Lord! Yet, I see great value in your perspective. For me, the way I love to connect with my friends is walking together, maybe on the beach. 🙂
