This week’s FMF writing prompt is: EXPLORE
Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.
My daughter is a junior this year, so you know what that means . . . We’re all trying to figure out what she’s going to do after high school.
This week has been my kids’ spring break, so we scheduled a couple of college visits, including our first out-of-state visit. My daughter really doesn’t know what she wants to do after school. Neither did I when I was her age. So we’ve decided to adopt a “process of elimination” technique to narrow down some options.
My theory is that with each school we visit, she’ll start to get a better idea of what she likes and doesn’t like, wants and doesn’t want in a college experience – if she goes at all.
As we explore these options, I’m encouraging her to stay open-minded. Even if she doesn’t choose one of these colleges or universities, did she like the general size? Location? Distance from home? What are the pros and cons?
I’m trying to remind myself to stay open-minded, too. Since my kids were little, I’ve tried to remind myself that the most important thing is whether they’re following Jesus or not. Whether she chooses to go to college or not, my prayer is that she would love the Lord her God with all her heart, soul, mind, and strength.
STOP.

Cocoa the Chihuahua
ran right out the door,
thinking, oh, yeah, ha ha,
it’s time now to explore
a world of sand and sage and cow,
a world he longed to meet,
a world that was compelled to bow
at a small dog’s feet.
Cocoa’s freedom run went bad
before much time would pass
and he knew that he’d been had
when a neighbour grabbed his a**
and handled valiant escapee
over the fence, and back to me
That’s a beautiful wish for your children. May God continue to go with them as they explore all the possibilities!
A thriving relationship with Jesus is far more important than whether a high school graduate choses to go to college or not. Keeping the process in prayer will ensure that she makes the right choice!
You are a good mama! I agree that the most important thing is for my kids to love the Lord and know He loves them more!
Big steps ahead for your daughter, and for you – and so many possibilities to explore! The most important thing is that our kids are following the Lord. Everything else falls into place when they start with that.
