FMF Writing Prompt Link-up :: Root

This week’s FMF writing prompt is: ROOT




Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO. 

This past Saturday my husband and I went for a walk in the morning. It was a rare Saturday when I didn’t have to drive anyone anywhere (including myself), so after our walk I decided to stay in my workout clothes instead of taking a shower and do some yard work. I started at 10am and didn’t stop until 4pm.

After picking up the scraps from some recently cut down bushes, I decided to take out another small bush that had been bothering my husband when he mowed the lawn. It was tiny — like, less than two feet tall. I stepped on my metal shovel to dig around the bush and managed to loosen it up . . . but the roots remained. I yanked and pulled and heaved and jumped on my shovel to no avail. I finally had to call my 15-year-old son to help me. I had been defeated by the roots of a tiny bush.

I often hear the phrase “getting to the root of the issue,” but now it took on a new meaning. I couldn’t help but think of the power of roots in our lives — for good or for bad. Ultimately, I was encouraged by the truth that when we are rooted in Christ, we cannot be moved. Nothing can pluck us out of His hand. He is the vine, we are the branches. When we remain in Him and He in us, we are safe and secure for all eternity.




“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

  • I hope I'm deeply rooted
    in faith and in belief,
    but when the question's mooted
    I may run on the reef
    of envy of those better off,
    in their shiny lives,
    though outwardly I'll glibly scoff
    at mansions and at trophy wives,
    but I must face the worst of me
    that's down beneath the soil,
    that disdains so readily
    a life of honest toil
    and looks to what I never had,
    the comfort of a trust-fund lad.

  • Absolutely, Kate. The roots can be at least as big as the tree!
    As the root, so the fruit. Good and bad roots run equally deep.
