This week’s FMF writing prompt is: REPRESENT
If you read my post from last week’s FMF link-up, you’ll remember that this past weekend I took my 17-year-old daughter on a spontaneous, whirlwind girls’ trip to New York City for an event that was the perfect trifecta of her loves in life.
We got to be in the same room with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Danai Gurira, the woman who plays Okoye in Black Panther.
I agreed to the trip at very short notice and stressed all week about where we would stay, how we would get where we wanted to be, and all the other logistics involved.
I went to spend time with my daughter, but not only for that.
I went to make memories with her during her senior year, but not only for that.
I went because my mom would’ve done it for me, but not only for that.
I really went for this:
My girl’s comment on Lin-Manuel’s Instagram post after the event . . .
SO worth it, right?
During their conversation after the show, Lin and Danai talked about they didn’t see the roles and characters they longed to see on stage and screen when they were growing up . . . So they decided to write them themselves.
As a writer, I found it so encouraging (and challenging) to realize that whoever you may be trying to reach — survivors of abuse, widows, veterans, single moms, those suffering with terminal illness, unbelievers — someone is waiting to see themselves represented by your words and what you have to offer.
Keep writing.

So glad you had a good time, Kate!
I cannot represent you;
it’s not lack of sympathy,
but I know this to be quite true,
it’s too hard to just be me,
dealing here with cancer
that sinks me like a stone.
I don’t have an answer;
you must find that alone.
I can tell you how I get
through each exhausting day,
but there is no solution set
to help you find your way.
But know, please, ’till I’m dead and gone,
I will be here to cheer you on.
Five minutes ten seconds. Meh.
Such an encouraging post. What perfect, profound memories you created together.
Love this, and your takeaway at the end–“whoever you may be trying to reach — survivors of abuse, widows, veterans, single moms, those suffering with terminal illness, unbelievers — someone is waiting to see themselves represented by your words and what you have to offer.” So true, and I had never really thought of that. Thanks for sharing.
