It’s Day 7 of the series, 31 Books by Author of Color. I hope you’ve been enjoying the recaps and recommendations I’ve been sharing on Instagram so far this month! (If you’re not following along yet, you can fix that here.) 😉
Today’s feature is Becoming, by former First Lady Michelle Obama. I listened to this book on audio from my library, and Michelle Obama read it herself.
It is a long book and took me a while to get through, but I found it so fascinating and definitely worth the time and effort to enjoy. I learned so much, and finished the book with a much deeper respect for the Obamas. I loved hearing about Michelle’s childhood and upbringing, and how various happenings in her life led her to where she is today.
I admired her tenacity and perseverance, and her ability to remain composed in the face of great difficulty and challenge. I also really enjoyed learning more about their path to the White House, as well as what life was like for her as the First Lady of the United States.
No matter which side of the political spectrum you fall on, this is a very interesting and informative take on one woman’s extraordinary life and the courage and stamina required to become who she is today.Â

Sounds like an interesting book. Should go with my reads about the Tuskegee Airmen and the 761st tank battalion, the Black Panthers.
Because I was a slant-eyed kid,
I was pigeonholed when young,
and no matter what I did people figured I’d become
some bow-tied computer geek
or perhaps a CPA,
or maybe a physics freak
in a lab, and go away
from the world of rounder eyes,
from the place of fairer skins,
and to me ’twas no surprise
that the racist world begins
when the fact of what I am
makes me somewhat less a man.
