FMF Writing Prompt Link-up :: Someday

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Five Minute Friday writing prompt link-up. If you’re new here, an extra special welcome to you! Each week we gather around a single word prompt, set a timer for five minutes, write like crazy, then share what we’ve written to build community with other writers.

Sound like fun?

This week’s FMF writing prompt is: SOMEDAY

Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.

I keep seeing the same advertisement when I’m watching TV. Honestly, I can’t even tell you what the ad is for (so apparently it’s not that effective), but in the commercial, several kids are sharing their imaginary “somedays.”

One little girl says, “Someday I’m gonna be the first female president . . . of the universe.”

Another little girl says, “Someday I’m going to let all of the balloon animals roam free.”

A little boy is seen riding in the back seat of a vehicle with his dog before he says, “Someday I’m gonna be able to read dogs’ minds.”

While these anecdotes are cute, they also got me thinking about my “someday.” What do I wish for? What do I long for?

Someday I’m going to . . . what?

Fill in the blank.

Maybe it’s because I’m older now or perhaps just cynical (reserved? cautious? jaded?) . . . but I find it difficult to dream about potential realities of “someday.” Maybe because I know there are no guarantees in this life.

Sure, we can have hopes and dreams and goals and aspirations, but in truth, we don’t even know if we’ll get tomorrow.

The only guaranteed “someday” — the one I am absolutely, positively, 100% certain about and look forward to with immeasurable anticipation — is that someday Jesus Christ is going to return and call home those who belong to Him. And that someday is most certainly worth waiting for.

STOP.

  • I believe in Someday,
won't let the waiting make me glum,
because I know that come what may,
    my Someday's gonna come,
and I will ride out from the prison
of the puking and the pain.
My dreams, quiescent, will have risen,
and I'll draw deep breath again,
    but until that day arrives
    I will make make preparation,
    for nothing hopeful ever thrives
    in the grim sad desperation
of a heart that's given up,
and drunk of sorrow's hemlock cup.

Three minutes total, but interrupted by a New Dog Jailbreak (Tashka' the Anatolian Shepherd puppy figured out how to open his crate).

  • Amen! Completely agree! wishing for somedays wastes time, unless they are turned into a goal, and these days my goals are simple ... heaven, and heaven plus as many as will come with me. Blessings!
