You guys . . . I don’t know where this past week went! I feel as if I was just putting together last week’s FMF post, and here we are again! 🙂
I hope you’ve had a great week, even if it did pass quickly for you as well.
If you’re new to the Five Minute Friday community, a special welcome to you!

This week’s FMF writing prompt is: NOTHING
Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.Â
This is our fourth spring in our house.
We moved in during late November, and in West Michigan that means our first several months were cold and bleak and dead.
Then, as spring arrived, something glorious happened.
Unbeknownst to me, the previous owner had planted tons and tons of perennial flowers.
The daffodils appeared first, then irises and lilies. Over the next few weeks I was treated to new surprises every day: lavender and poppies and roses and flowers I couldn’t name, and my absolute favorite, the peonies. Oh, the peonies.
The most glorious and amazing part of all is that I had to do absolutely nothing to benefit from the beauty all around me.
I didn’t plant the flowers, I didn’t water them . . . nothing.
They just appeared, in all of their radiant glory.
To me, it was like a picture of grace and salvation. I did absolutely nothing to deserve the glorious gift of salvation that God offers to all who believe in His Son, Jesus Christ . . . and yet He bestowed it on me through faith.
It blows my mind.
So next time so you see a flower that you didn’t plant or water, my hope is that you will also think about the unfathomable gift that requires nothing but an act of faith and acceptance on your part — and be grateful for the immeasurable grace of God.
STOP.Â

It is quite a mystery,
and only Heaven knows
why I’ve a black thumb or three,
and nothing I plant grows,
except once for some strawberries
in good soil, grew in haste,
but for me bad luck never tarries,
and the gophers loved their taste.
There were violets from Africa,
pink, purple and blue,
who killed themselves after a
day, or maybe two,
and if that’s not sufficient-drastic,
I’ve killed a palm made out of plastic.
Four minutes thirty.
Andrew, you always make me laugh! What a gift you have!
The peonies are beautiful this year. I am enjoying them also, giving thanks for the tremendous variety of flowers and colors created by God!
What a beautiful analogy, Kate! All those beautiful flowers you never expected and you did nothing to bring them about. And, of course, we can do nothing to bring about our salvation, but praise God, Jesus did it all! Blessings to you!
