This week’s FMF writing prompt is: SAME

Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.

If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll know that my youngest of three children is about to start his senior year of high school. The last year of lasts. One more round of college and scholarship applications, deadlines, and fees.

As I attempt to mentally prepare for his imminent departure, I’ve come to realize that while I love each one of my kids in  equal measure, my relationship with each of them is quite different from the others.

The holes they leave behind are not the same shape.

I suppose this fact should not surprise me, but it has. For some reason I’ve only truly understood the roles they fill in our home when I think about what it will be like when they’re gone.

I share similar traits and tendencies with some, and not with others. I know some will appreciate certain stories or jokes, while others will not. They all have different strengths and weaknesses. I love them the same, and yet they are so very different.

I wonder if God thinks of His children in a similar way. He paid the same immeasurable sacrifice for each one of His children, yet He created them to be individual and unique. Not one person is the same, and yet He loves us all the same.

A mystery and a comfort.

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God . . .”
~ John 1:12, ESV

  • It's the same, goes 'round again,
it's the same thing as before,
it's the same that never ends,
and I'm looking for the door
except that in my heart I know
that going through it I will find
not a new and cheery glow,
but sameness, makes me lose my mind,
so I guess I will just deal
    with the local carousel,
and try real hard not to feel
    that monotony is hell,
but instead chance for a choice
to speak love in God's own voice.

Three minutes flat. Meaningful or nonsense?

  • The holes they leave behind are not the same shape. <-- Such an apt description of what it's like to have the nest start to empty. ((hugs)) and prayers for all the adjustments and bittersweet moments ahead!
