Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.
Of course I can’t write on a prompt like “satisfied” and not think of the song from my favorite musical, Hamilton. Renee Elise Goldsberry’s performance here is just too good.
But for the purpose of this post, I want to go a little deeper.
As we’ve just begun a new calendar year, it’s common to reflect on the past year.
Was I satisfied with the year? Was I satisfied with my actions? My accomplishments? My relationships? My work?
What about the coming year? What will it take for me to say I am satisfied?
Perhaps I am asking the wrong (or simply unproductive) questions. Perhaps a better and more important question for me to ask is:
What would it take for me to be satisfied in Christ alone?
The passage from Proverbs 30:7-9 comes to mind:
“Two things I ask of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.”
It all boils down to contentment, doesn’t it?
Lord, make me content in You alone.
STOP.

Happy New Year! I hope you had a good Christmas break. The first thing that came to mind for me was also the song from Hamilton!
I can't get no satisfaction
(that may be true for Mick!),
but that thought don't get no traction
with this Jersey hick.
I delight in little things,
like guns and dogs and my old truck,
and smell of fresh-doped airplane wings,
and clovers picked for luck.
This is stuff that satisfies
my need for childlike wonder,
that makes my open wide my eyes
at so much that is under
the bright hot sun the Lord hath made
from which I really don't need shade.
Welcome back.
