This week’s FMF writing prompt is: REMNANT

remnant

Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.

My kids are all out of the house now, but when they come back for a visit, I become giddy with excitement. It’s like I get bubbles of joy in my stomach at their arrival.

But when it’s time for them to leave again, it’s as if those bubbles become filled with lead and sink to the bottom of my gut.

Inevitably, they leave something behind. A toothbrush. Hair products. Runaway raisins on the floor.

And when my eye catches those reminders, those remnants of their presence, my throat catches a bit. That’s all that’s left of them in this place.

They’ve moved on, as it’s supposed to go, and they’re building beautiful lives of their own in their new spaces.

I know this is the natural progression of things and I’m so grateful for where they’ve landed. But it still hurts a little every time they walk away.

STOP.
