Setting my timer for five minutes and . . . GO.Â
My youngest informed me this week that he wanted to come home from college on Thursday evening to watch a few of his friends graduate from his alma mater.
It seemed like a lot of hassle and expense to get home less than an hour before the ceremony, sleep, and leave with the sunrise to make it back to his university in time for classes the next day.
The logistics included a short train ride, a walk between train stations, a longer train ride, and a four-hour round-trip drive by his chauffeur sister just to make it home. Was it really worth it?
But then I thought back to his own high school graduation exactly a year ago, and how the tears flowed incessantly as his best friend who passed away in their senior year was honored and remembered. Then my mind went to the funeral and how meaningful it was to see so many graduates lining the walls of the church who had made a trip back from out-of-town universities to be there.
And I realized it does matter, and it is worth it. The benefit may not be tangible, but to be reunited with old friends, teachers, parents, fellow graduates and alumni . . . to be together while there is still time . . . it means something.
STOP.
