This week’s FMF writing prompt is: PHASE

Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.Â
This past week I had the opportunity to take my friend’s three kids to another friend’s pool. A couple from church had graciously extended an open invitation for anyone to come over one afternoon to enjoy the refreshing water on a hot summer’s day.
Well. We got there and I’m not even exaggerating when I say there were thirty kids in that pool at one time.
At first I felt rather overwhelmed by the sheer volume of people in a confined space, but you know what? It was actually delightful.
Most of the adults there were young moms with young kids. Since my youngest recently turned nineteen, I was definitely the odd one out.
Funny enough, within about a five-minute period I had managed to get one kid’s pee on my hand and another kid’s blood on my hand — and neither of them were kids I had taken with me to the pool! Ha! (It’s a long story.)
But I looked around at these young moms wrangling multiple children in wet bathing suits and flotation devices, I thought, They’re doing it. I should’ve commended them out loud, but even as I drove away that afternoon, I thought, They’re doing it. They’re in the thick of this motherhood thing, and they’re making it happen. It’s exhausting and overwhelming and delightful, and on the days when the kids are little it feels like it will never end, but it goes by oh, so fast. And then next thing you know, the kid who made you a mom is turning twenty-one and then you might just wish you could go back and do it all over again.
STOP.

Life, it happens in its phases,
some delightful, some a bore,
and the thing that sore amazes
me is that we’re always wanting more.
More years here, even the worst,
more years, surely, of the best,
but it seems like we are cursed
to fail time’s cruel litmus test
that says we never can return,
that says the past is done and gone
however much we weep and yearn
that the curtain not be drawn,
but know that as God saves our tears,
He saves and shines all of our years.
Don’t know what happened to my comment… I’ll try to reconstitute it.
Oh, sorry, it turned up, late, like I always am.
Oh, yes! Their doing it! Blessings to all those moms!
watching people do their various stages of their life well is always a wonderful thing.
