Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.
Two weeks ago, my 91-year-old father fell in his closet at home and broke his femur in half. After a lengthy process of being extricated by paramedics and firefighters then enduring the grueling pain of being transferred to an x-ray table and back again, he ended up having surgery to insert a metal rod and a metal plate from knee to hip.
After spending a few nights in the hospital, he was transferred to a residential facility for rehab and nursing care.
The first day I visited him in his new room at the rehabilitation center, I said as I was heading out the door, “Okay Dad, I’ll see you later.” To which he replied, “I’ll be here!”
He didn’t choose that circumstance or dwelling place, but he had accepted his lot and seems to be making the most of it. I’m sure he wishes the fall had never happened but now that it has, he is grateful to be getting good care and making every effort toward recovery.
His outlook has given me an attitude check: Am I content in my own circumstances? Am I accepting this season of life for what it is, acknowledging that “I’ll be here” for a while?
Wherever “here” is for you, may you embrace the lot you have been given by the Lord and use it for good and for His glory in whatever way you can.
STOP.

Here I am, having hard-fallen,
and here I am, my joy is full
for somehow I hew to God’s calling
with a painful crack-ed skull.
Here, left eye can’y see;
here, and it hurts quite severe,
but it really seems to me
that God does love me, and is near.
I’m dizzy, and would fall again
but for that unseen gentle hand
that supports, but won’t restrain
so that I might understand
the pain of being, which defines
the lives so much harder than mine.
Amen! prayers for your dad. … great attitude!
Thank you, Rachel!
Here lies my thoughts
Dead and immobile
Here lies my opportunities
Reviewed for options
Here lies my future self
Rested and ready for new life
Here lies the start of a new chapter.
Thank you for participating and sharing, Elaine! Glad to have you with us! 🙂
Your dad sounds like he has an amazing attitude.
Just said a prayer that the Lord would grant him a speedy and complete recovery.
Thank you so much, Sandra!
