This week’s FMF writing prompt is: BRIEF

Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.Â
This past week marked the fifteenth anniversary of my mom’s death.
I don’t know why, but those five-year markers seem to hit me harder than others. The tenth was a tough one too, and this past week got to me. Fifteen years just sounds (and feels) like such a long time.
But then I think about the verse that talks about “these light and momentary troubles” and I realize that fifteen years compared to eternity is but a breath. A brief blip of brokenness before all will be made whole.
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”
~ 2 Corinthians 4:17
I love what John Piper shares in the middle of this song, “Though You Slay Me.”
Such a good reminder that no matter what kind of suffering we may experience in this life, it is all temporary and it all has meaning. We may not understand the why, but that doesn’t take away from its purpose. These brief trials, in comparison to eternity, are achieving for us a glory that far outweighs them all.
So whether it’s fifteen more years or fifty until I get to glory, I can be confident that God is going to sustain me through each one and that what is still to come is so much greater than even the best day now.
STOP.Â

In the twinkling of an eye
we’ll be gone and we’ll be There
in the great sweet by and by,
and us baldies will have hair!
In the brief and lightning flash
we’ll meet in the atmosphere
as trumpets blow and cymbals clash,
and we will then behold the dear
face of Christ, our mighty Friend
who will extend a gentle hand
that takes ours that we won’t pretend
that we’re smart and understand,
but surrender rather to His smile
and dance with Him in disco style.
Oh, wow! I’ve never heard this song. It’s beautiful. I’m praying for you in this moment, Kate. I know it’s so hard to be separated from our moms until heaven. Mine has been there for 5 years. May the God of all comfort be near to you this week and always.
I had not heard this song either. Thanks for sharing.
Encouraging message by John Pipe, but even knowing it’s all temporary and has meaning, it can still be hard in the moment.
Praying for comfort for you, Kate.
