It’s time for our weekly Five Minute Friday blog link-up!

If you’re new to FMF, you can learn more about how the link-up works here.

This week’s prompt is: ADAPT

Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.

I hear his accent change depending on who he’s talking to on the phone. Most times I can even guess which specific friend is on the other line.

I do it, too — if I’m speaking to an American, one voice comes out . . . if I’m talking to a South African, something else emerges altogether.

It didn’t take my kids long at all after we landed in the States more than five years ago. When we Skyped some South African friends less than two weeks after our arrival, they gasped when they heard my kids over the speaker: “They sound so American already!”

Sometimes we can struggle to adapt to new situations and circumstances, but other times God gives us the grace to transition without much effort at all.

This passage from 1 Corinthians comes to mind, where the Apostle Paul says,

“Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone,to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews.To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.

To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law.

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.”

~ 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

May God open our eyes to the opportunities around us, and may He give us the grace to adapt in such a way that He enables us to win some, for the sake of the gospel.

STOP.

  • Funny Kate, because we have lived in the Appalachian Mountains for 30 years. I am a Jersey girl by birth, transplanted to South Florida at a young age for 30 years, and now here. I have adapted but I cannot get rid of that Jersey voice!!!!

  • Thanks for hosting the link-up, Kate. I really enjoy thinking about a new word each Friday.

  • Kate, I enjoyed your story of adapting to life on this side of the ocean. It's amazing how fast we copy the accent of those around us. Even if I listen to a speaker via the computer I find myself sounding like that person. It reminds me to be careful of the tone of my thoughts and speech around little ones who are designed to copy the adults in their lives.
    Blessings ~ Wendy

  • I’ve been reading Bob Goff’s new book—he’d probably say that to become love we have to adapt a lot—because that’s what love does!
