We’re back! I apologize that once again (twice in three weeks!) I had some technical issues and couldn’t access my own website to host last week’s link-up. But thankfully I think we finally figured it out, we’re back in action.
If you’re new to Five Minute Friday, a special welcome to you. We gather each week around a single word prompt to freewrite for five minutes flat. You’re welcome to share your work in the link-up at the bottom of this post! Learn more here.
And if I do have technical glitches in the future, this email list is the best, easiest, and most reliable way for me to reach you, so if you want to stay in the loop, be sure to sign up here.
This week’s Five Minute Friday writing prompt is: OPPOSITE
Setting my timer for five minutes, and . . . GO.Â
For a brief two weeks this summer, my two youngest kids are home at the same time. We’re not talking about the fact that one leaves again on Sunday and the other leaves two weeks after that.
For now, they are both home. And it is delightful.
These are the two who were born two months apart, the two who were frequently assumed to be twins from the time they were about five and seven.

The two who can play a board game that involves questions and answers about some topic or another and can read each other’s minds with just a look.
These two get along so well — and they could hardly be more opposite from each other.
One wakes up early, the other sleeps in late.
One gets their work done way ahead of time, the other procrastinates to the last possible second.
One likes to eat healthily and exercise, the other likes to snack and relax.
One prefers to have a detailed plan, the other flies by the seat of their pants.
One hangs their clothes in their closet according to color and style, the other has two heaping piles on the floor: “clean” and dirty.
Despite their differences, they always want to be together.
Soon they will be on opposite sides of the same city — one to the north, the other to the south. And just like a magnet with polar opposite forces on either side, I have a feeling these two will be drawn together by their opposing poles to meet in the middle.
STOP.

The opposite of hate is love,
the opposite of fear is faith,
at least that’s what our God above
wants from us, or so He saith,
so what are we to do today,
when everyone is crossing swords?
Is there something we can say
to point the fever’d people towards
the gentle Lamb who went to die
so that we might be redeemed…
and is He maybe asking why
He bothered, for it’s lately seemed
that we’d rather choose to despise
what’s precious in His Father’s eyes?
I know what it’s like to be opposites with someone. I have a twin sister. We have some similarities but we’re also very different. She is last-minute Lisa. I am a big planner. I’m very careful before I do things. She is more spontaneous. What’s really great is that God loves us both the same, and he uses us equally for his glory. So it is with the body of Christ. One person is a foot. The other is a hand. But together we all make up God‘s building.
What a precious picture of the two of them.
Sweet picture – and word pictures – of your kids. There are plenty of opposite tendencies among my kids as well, and yet they get along and love being together. Good to be back for this week’s FMF. It’s been a minute. 🙂
