This week’s FMF writing prompt is: SPARK
I shared here a few weeks ago about how my husband was invited to travel to Cape Town, South Africa to participate in a farewell service for our former pastor’s retirement after 27 years at the same church.
In my post, I mentioned that the service leader asked the congregation to stand up, and to remain standing if they had ever had a meal in Pastor Alan’s house.
As far as I could see on the livestream video from afar, every person in the congregation remained standing.
That’s the kind of pastor he has been.
After witnessing this testimony and hearing numerous recorded videos from loved ones now serving the Lord around the world sharing the impact of Alan’s ministry in their lives, I found myself questioning:
“What am I doing with my life?”
What kind of difference am I making, if any?
Just a few hours ago, I read the news online that a well-known pastor died suddenly today after a medical emergency, leaving behind a wife and nine children.
56 years old.
One moment he was alive on this earth, the next he was gone here and alive in the next.
No warning.
He didn’t have time to decide what his legacy would be one day when he got older; he was already living it day by day as he preached the Word and raised his family.
We might get 27 years serving in the same church. We might get 56 years total before the Lord calls us home.
Since we don’t know what tomorrow will bring, what are we doing today?
STOP.

I want to set a spark for Christ
in at least in one more heart
to honour what He sacrificed
that I could be a part
of His glorious ministry,
of sweet Heaven’s reach,
and if I get just one to see,
I’ll have stood in the breach
against the forces dark and vile
that would steal every soul
by pretending that it is in style
to have mock’ry be one’s goal.
Please, Jesus, make me firm and true,
that I may bring others to you!
Yes I think so many of us are asking ourselves that question, re-evaluating, after the events of the last few weeks.
