Story about dog riding in car, compare to rush of downhill skiing or jet skiing
A couple weeks ago, I was driving somewhere and saw a dog in the car next to me, sticking his head out the open window, living his absolute best life.
This dog was absolutely thrilled to be where he was — the rush of the wind on his face, trees whipping past as the car whooshed down the road.
I know it sounds silly, but I found myself wondering, When’s the last time I felt that kind of rush? That kind of thrill?
It reminded me of the feeling I get when I’m downhill skiing (which, by the way, is not very often!).
I just adore that sensation of abandon when you’re gliding down the powdered mountain at full speed, not a care in the world. There’s not much better.
I’ve felt it on a jet ski on Lake Michigan in my teens, too. Just open water and a full throttle, the watercraft lifting and dropping with each wave, the spray of the water against your shins, hair whipping all around.
I realize life is not all about chasing a thrill, but I wonder if I’ve stopped looking altogether? If I’ve grown to expect the routine and mundane, and closed myself off to the possibility of anything more? Or sometimes outright refused the invitation to experience anything more, out of fear of what could go wrong?
The days are short, and life is full of goodness to be found.
STOP.

Every morning brings a thrill
when at last it does arrive,
because I know it is God’s will
that I am here, and still alive.
The nights crawl past on turtle feet
of the most appalling pain,
and I therefore wait to meet
the sun which says I might remain
for a little while, at least,
to write and work in God’s employ,
and as a most grateful beast
I kick my heels in boundless joy
and cancer shakes its weary head;
it thought at last I might be dead!
Great questions, Kate – ones to take to the Lord in prayer. Different kinds of thrills for different seasons, but thrills nonetheless.
