It’s Day 23 of 31 Days in the Life of a Christian Writer! Each post in this series has been written in five minutes flat as part of the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Challenge. See the full list of posts here.

Today’s prompt is: WORK

work for the Lord

There’s one thing that separates those who aspire to be Christian writers versus those who actually are Christian writers:

Whether or not they do the work.

It’s one thing to have lofty ideas and goals, and to think long and hard about what you’d like to do someday — it’s an entirely different thing to put your behind in the chair and get the work done.

Yes, life happens and things come up that prevent us from making as much progress as we might have hoped.

But there’s a point at which we all need to determine that we’re going to stop thinking, talking, and planning, and actually do the work.

So, what’s holding you back? Fear? Busyness? Plain ol’ procrastination?

As I mentioned in a previous post in this series, Professor Don Perini challenged many of us at a recent writers conference to face those obstacles head on:

“Resistance comes in many forms for the writer: perfectionism, fear, procrastination, self doubt, busyness, distractions. The only way to fight resistance is to do something about it.”

What do you battle with most, and what can you do about it?

Start by telling someone. Accountability can work wonders for productivity.

Tell someone about your struggle, ask them to brainstorm ways to overcome it, and set a date to check in with each other again. Set specific goals and deadlines for yourself, and plug them into your calendar.

Say no to unnecessary commitments or opportunities that will take away from your productivity time. See your project as important.

Resist the resistance. Do the work.
